Taking notes is a proven technique that supports learning, organizes knowledge, and helps with long-term retention. In the SuperMemo app, you can add your own notes at any time during your study sessions. This functionality allows you to tailor the material to your individual needs, creating a bridge between the provided content and your way of absorbing knowledge.
Why is it worth taking notes?
Better Understanding of the Material
Creating notes engages your brain in actively processing information, not just passively absorbing it. This way, you better understand the meaning of new words or grammar rules and more easily notice connections between concepts.
Personalized Learning
Your own notes allow you to add explanations, associations, and examples tailored to your way of thinking. You can also include your own shortcuts, explanations, pictures, or symbols that help you remember. This way, you can remember information from cards that are difficult for you, making them appear more frequently in your review se
How to Add a Note in SuperMemo?
To add a note to a specific card:
During your study session, click the note icon.

Type the note text in the displayed text field. You can also attach a multimedia file, such as an image. We’ve also added the option “Show note with the answer only,” which you can activate when, for example, you add a grammar explanation in the note and want to review it only after clicking “Check.” By default, the note will be immediately visible on the card.

Save the note – this will ensure that the note appears in subsequent reviews.
You can edit or delete notes anytime when they are no longer needed.

Practical Uses of Notes
- Translations and Synonyms – Type the version of the word that sounds natural to you or note alternative expressions.
- Example Sentences – Write short sentences that show how the word is used in context.
- Grammar Tips – Add explanations about exceptions, irregular forms, or usage rules.
- Personal Associations and Mnemonics – Use memory techniques, such as rhymes, visual associations (pictures), or the loci technique (linking a word to an image of a place).
Tips for Effective Note-Taking
- Be concise – Short, to-the-point notes are more useful than long blocks of text.
- Use your own words – Paraphrasing helps you remember better.
- Highlight key elements – Use symbols, e.g., “!” for important rules or “?” for issues that need review.
Summary
The note function in SuperMemo is much more than a place for comments. It is a tool that allows you to take control of your learning. With personalization and engagement, the content you learn becomes easier to understand and stays in your memory longer.
